Cordwood Energy Systems for Community Heating in Alaska--An Overview

چکیده
Nicholls, David; Miles, Tom. 2009. Cordwood energy systems for community heating in Alaska—an overview. Gen. Tech. Rep. PNW-GTR-783. Portland, OR: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Pacific Northwest Research Station. 17 p. Wood has become an important energy alternative in Alaska, particularly in rural areas where liquid fuel costs can be substantial. In some cases, wood fuel is readily available to communities, increasing the attractiveness of wood energy. Wood energy systems in rural Alaska can also lead to employment gains as well as benefits to local cash economies. Many Alaska villages are now considering wood as a fuel source for community heating, several have completed feasibility studies, and others are moving forward with design and construction activities. Cordwood is readily available in many regions of Alaska, although not always in commercial quantities. However, for many small-scale applications, efficient cordwood systems could be a viable energy option. In this paper, we provide a qualitative review of factors such as wood fuel availability, cordwood system size, wood fuel cost, wood quality, labor, fuel drying, and underground piping. Other general observations are noted, based on case studies of operating cordwood systems in Alaska.

Comparative performance assessment of flat plate and evacuated tube collectors for domestic water heating systems in Kerman, Iran
This study represents a year-round energy performance of two solar water heating (SWH) systems with a 4m2 flat plate collector (FPC) and an evacuated tube collector (ETC) operating under the same weather conditions. The energy performance of the two considered systems was compared on a monthly and yearly basis. The obtained results showed that for an annual total solar insolation of ...

In this investigation, the performance of an existing heating system of a residential building incorporated with an array of solar thermal collectors was studied. For this purpose, transient systems simulation program model was assembled to estimate the hour-by-hour performance of the existing and the system equipped with the solar thermal collectors in terms of the provided space air condition...
متن کاملSizing of a Packed Bed Storage for Solar Air Heating Systems (TECHNICAL NOTE)
Packed bed units generally, represent the most suitable storage units for air heating solar systems. In these systems the storage unit receives the heat from the collector during the collection period and discharges the heat to the building at the retrieval process. A method for sizing of packedbed storage in an air heating system is represented. The design is based on the K-S curves, which hav...
